Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

Kermis Time

Gardening, Hunt'n, Life Is Good, Holidays

When the Belgian immigrants came to this country one of the traditions they brought  with them was the Kermis.

Derived from the words - Church Mass - Kermis has its roots in the celebration of the fall harvest.  Much of the celebration was centered around the local church.

You won't see too much of traditions like this in urban Wisconsin.  It happens to be a really big deal in parts of rural communities.  There has been quite a bit of celebrating in northeastern Wisconsin lately along with all of the  harvesting.  And there seems to be no shortage of opportunities to celebrate.

While my neighbor makes a living farming...

My small operation adjacent to the machine shed has resulted in a boatload of stuff that should last well into the new year.  I had a  bumper crop of potatoes...

And a really nice crop of regular and sweet onions.  Those red cabbages in the background are just about ready to pick.

The root cellar is jam-packed with all manner of preserved goods.  Tomatoes, pie filling, apple sauce, chutney, corn relish, green beans, all kinds of pickles, beets, tomato sauces, juice and kraut.  Canned venison too.

With all of this stuff (including that case of Canadian lager) I could probably ride-out a good portion of the apocalypse.

Just kidding.

I've been out but once bow hunting and saw plenty of deer and even had a couple of shot situations that I might just regret passing-up.  We'll have to see.

The venison supply has dwindled to a minimum of steaks, chops and burger.  It would sure be nice to get a whitetail in the freezer before too long.

That - with some pheasants, grouse and woodcock would make the fall harvest complete.
