Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

Opening Day

Deer Camp, Friends, Terrific Cooking

The atmosphere is charged.

Probably has something to do with the big jar of pickled eggs, the aged brick cheese and the home brew that was served last night.

The two hunters that have been away for a spell are back.

Android has been posted to Malaysia and Thailand for more than a year is finally back in the states.  He drove from Paducah, KY to join us.  He's the youngest of the group.  Wise Guy took a year off and regretted the decision.  He's back.  At 72 years of age he's the most senior of the group.

Wise Guy gave us a scare last night.

He was enjoying a refreshing adult beverage and discussing business matters.  Pausing to make a point, he leaned back on his bar stool and toppled backwards ass over tea kettle.

SMACK!

His head whacked the wall leaving a nice divot in the plaster.

We thought he was a gonner for sure.

Nope.  No blood, no nothing.

(This could only happen at deer camp)

Full moon last night.  Probably not the best for opening morning but it is what it is.

26 degrees with a stiff wind out of the north.  The ponds and the creek have a skim of ice.

Not much shooting going on.  Nothing from the neighbors anyway.  The  surrounding woods have been quiet.

I'm in to thaw out, feed the dog, put breakfast in the oven and post this.

Android shot one deer and missed a second.  Wise Guy took two shots and put down a couple of deer.

It seems fitting the prodigal hunters - the oldest and the youngest - killed the camp's first deer.

So far that's three on the meat pole.

Update later today.

Update 6:30 PM

Sid and Braumeister just returned from town after registering the two deer that Sid killed this afternoon.

That would make for a total of five on opening day and seven for the season.  We're wondering about available freezer space.

Plenty of shooting this afternoon and a very busy registration station.  Anecdotally-speaking I think everyone on the peninsula is having a successful hunt.

The boys want my readers to know that there is no smoking ban north of Highway 10.

There is a giant roast in the oven and we're snacking upon grilled Szechuan marinated dove breasts with bacon and water chestnuts.

Gas Pains' Deer Camp Egg Bake

6 slices cubed bread - give or take

1 pound of Jimmy Dean spicy breakfast sausage - cooked, drained and crumbled

1 bag (8 oz.) of shredded sharp cheddar

1 green pepper - diced

1 small onion - diced

1 dozen eggs

4 cups  of milk

1 T dry mustard

Special K cereal

Spray a pan with olive oil and scatter the bread cubes all over.  On top of this scatter the crumbled sausage, diced green pepper, onion and the shredded cheese.  Beat the eggs along with the milk and dry mustard.  Pour all over.  Cover with foil and refrigerate or keep in the garage over night.

Just before baking top with a layer of Special K.  Lightly spray the cereal topping with olive oil.

Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour - or until a toothpick comes clean.

Serve with fresh fruit.
