DSHA's Community Theatre Works Takes Beauty and the Beast to the Park!

Community, Fun, Theater

What could be more fun than FREE theatre in the park? How about FREE theatre in the park in Brookfield featuring many Wauwatosa, Brookfield and Milwaukee area performers?!

For the first time ever, Divine Savior Holy Angel High School’s acclaimed Community Theatre Works Program is bringing selections from their summer production of Beauty and the Beast to the Gerlach Outdoor Theatre at the Sharon Lynn Wilson Center in Brookfield on Saturday July 16th from 12-2pm. Admission is free, so grab your favorite blanket or chair and enjoy a picnic lunch in Brookfield’s Mitchell Park while you listen to selections from the Broadway show performed by the cast. Bring your camera and get your picture taken with your favorite characters. Hot dogs, ice cream and beverages will be sold. Dress up as your favorite princess or prince and receive a discount on tickets to the Saturday night or Sunday matinee performance of Beauty and the Beast at DSHA.

In 2009, Michael Stoddard, DSHA High School’s Director of Theatre, created a unique theatre program for kids and adults. Each summer, Community Theatre Works is open to ALL area students grades 5–8 and 9-12 (grade level in fall of 2011), as well as adults.

“In only three years CTW has tripled in size,” says Stoddard. “This is due to the amazing staff we have who know how to push the kids and raise the bar high, but still have fun while doing it. Educationally, this performance in the park is great for the performers, who range in age from 5th grade to adult, to have the experience of performing in an outdoor theatre. Pictures, food, fun, Disney songs…you can’t go wrong. What a great way to spend a summer Saturday afternoon in the Milwaukee area!”

CTW began in 2009 with the production of Honk! The Musical Tale of the Ugly Duckling, followed by Annie in the summer of 2010. CTW is an intensive, four-week rehearsal process combining the talents of DSHA students, DSHA alumnae, middle-school students and select community members. The mission of CTW is to educate students by working in tandem with local talent in a caring theatre environment that fosters mentoring, teaching, learning and growing.

Regular performances of Beauty and the Beast take place at the DSHA Hansen Theatre July 14 – 17th. Tickets can be purchased by calling (414)616-2813 or by going online at www.dsha.info at Shop DSHA.
