Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

Sister

Chick Magnet, Girlfriend, Gun Dog, Hunting, Labrador Retrievers, Raising a Puppy, Sister, Good Looking Blondes

Remember this cuddly little runt?

It seems like only yesterday that I was snatching her up and tucking her under my arm like a football to run to the yard in the wee hours so she could do her business.  No longer.  Bigger dog = bigger bladder.  That means no sunrise potty calls.

The chick magnet turned four months of age the other day and she's growing into a fine dog.  Blessed with an affable disposition and fond of belly rubs Sister is all sweetness.

She presently weighs-in at 35 pounds and is soaking-up her lessons like a sponge.  She knows her sit and down commands with cues that are both verbal and hand signal.  When afield she has associated the return command with the tone on her e-collar in a couple of short lessons.  She has taken to water.  She loves her crate.  She and Girlfriend generally play nice with one another and mix it up on a regular basis.  And of critical importance -  I can shoot over her.

On our long walks at the farm she has learned at the feet of her mistress the fine dining experience of an hors d'oeuvre consisting of an unlucky mouse.  And the pleasure that comes from rolling in another critter's feces.  The fresher the better.

As lovable as they are - Labs sure have some disgusting habits.

The breeder took forever to cash our check for our energetic bundle of joy.  Maybe she thought we might want to return her?  That's a crazy notion because the blonde dog is a keeper.

A collection of fetching young women were recently attracted to the pup and one of them pointed-out that the symmetrical white shading on Sister's shoulders are called Angel Wings.

Unfamiliar with the term I suggested this supported one of Sister's strongest suits.  She's just so darn cute!

If she could talk Girlfriend would tell you that black is beautiful. And even better with the seasonal rusty accents that come with summer.  However, the yellow Lab is a strong competitor in the department of good looks.

Just the other day I was sitting on the porch and having a discussion with her.

You're really learning your lessons quickly little one.  You're a smart and clever dog.  Not only are you as smart as a whip - you're a flaxen vixen.  With that sunny disposition, likeable personality, all of those smarts AND good looks you've got it all.  If you use these gifts to your advantage you're really going places.

She's got some quirks however.  If you scratch her chest in just the right spot her left hind leg starts to thumping.  There is also another behavior which has manifested itself.  Something Girlfriend has never, ever, indulged-in.

The little angel drinks from the toilet.
