Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

Blogging About the Blog

Blog Housekeeping, Gas Pains

That sure is a lame-sounding title isn't it?  Nevertheless, it is time to render the annual report.  Or shall we say - a good portion of the year report.

For openers I want to remind my 82 readers that it's not easy being a blogger here at TosaNOW.  The hours are long and criticism abundant.  Try to pull an April Fools joke and you have to publish a disclaimer.  Don't show any outrage over a new auto parts store in East Towne Tosa and you reap scorn and ridicule.  Stand-up and put your reputation on the line to find a mechanism to preserve the Eschweilers and people tell you you're nuts. Gun owner and gun rights advocate?  I might as well be certifiable.  Some evenings I sit in the warming glow of my computer monitor and wistfully think back to the early years of the blog.  I wax nostalgic and think about how the previous Mayor would poke me in the eye and I would do the same to her.  Sigh.  Those were the good old days.  I miss the old the former Mayor.  It's hard to catch a break nowadays.  Everyone's so ornery and on edge.  Complicating it all we've been up to our elbows around here in spammers pitching counterfeit goods from China.  And the pay still sucks.  But I digress.

The publishing of online content is generally supported with a robust tool that provides you with useful web analytics and digital optimization.  Simply-put you want to know what's hot and what's not so you can make optimal use of your precious band-width.  2012 data regarding traffic to the various NOW homepages is incomplete as the folks that run the Department of Online Advertising, Marketing and Sales, Advertising Renewals, High School Sports, News Coverage and Blogging switched from Omniture to Google Analytics around the middle of last March.  It is incomplete - but it is what it is.

Lest you think everyone is interested in reading about doom and gloom all the time the top five 2012 posts for Gas Pains are as follows:

#5 - Forest Exploration Center Considers the Eschweilers

#4 - How to Build a Deer Stand

#3 - Deer Camp 2012

#2 - Leave No Tragedy Unexploited

And the #1 post for 2012 was originally published on September 7, 2011.  It is the post that keeps on giving.  Drum roll please - How to Make Crispy, Crunchy, Sweet Pickles.  With 1,423 page views from 1,283 unique visitors and about 1,000 of those page views coming via Google.  At the time I tapped-out that little number who'd a thunk I would become something of an internet authority on crunchy sweet pickles.  If I could only monetize it I could be retired.

Gas Pains still ranks among the top ten community blogs publishing on the NOW sites.

And the top-ranked homepage for all 27 sites that comprise the big, happy CommunityNOW family is - bugle fanfare please -  WauwatosaNOW.

Tosa rules.  Brookfield drools.
