Blood Moon

Astronomy, Hunters Moon, Talking Turkey, Hunting, Superstition

At the farm with a 1st season turkey permit.  And it has been an inauspicious start.

Storms this week destroyed the blind that has been standing resolute since last year's deer season.  It is now torn, broken and flat.  Beyond repair.  Complicating the situation is that it has grown exceedingly cold with temps dropping into the 20s.  There has been more snow and the only element more abundant than snow is standing water.  The landscape is a sodden and partially frozen morass.

The good news is that tonight has brought-forth a stunning and spectacular Blood Moon. Tradition says that a Blood Moon is the first full moon to follow the Harvest Moon.  Sometimes referred-to as the Hunter's Moon these astronomical events are traditional terms for the full moons occurring in autumn, usually in September and October.

Tonight brings a Blood Moon coinciding with the deadline of tax filings and the eve of the turkey hunt.  This is an exceedingly rare event.  It is auspicious.  I don't want any of my readers to think I am superstitious or anything.  I just happen to like astronomy.

Nevertheless a Hunters Moon is a good omen...
