Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

The Best of Both Worlds

Family, Road Trips

That drop-dead, good-looking, young woman pictured above isn't a southern belle.  Not even a Georgia peach.  That roadside beauty happens to be my daughter.  A Tosa girl that got the happy feet after she graduated from Alverno and moved south to seek her own way in the world.  That's a curious thing about an Alverno education.  It instills a powerful confidence in young women and empowers them to take big - but educated - risks.

Since then she's settled on a career path, acquired a loving husband, they've begun raising a family, purchased a house and...Gasp!...the daughter has developed a subtle southern accent.

But if you were to chat with her Mississippi in-laws they would tell you she is still a 'Yankee Girl' at heart.  And they adore her.

Life in the Deep South has been good to her and for her.  And I harbor no illusions of her ever moving back to Wisconsin.  And that's OK.  We have an opportunity to fly down or make a road trip for a visit from time-to-time.  And Jill and I truly happen to enjoy southern culture.  Periodically the kids fly back to Wisconsin - usually in the depth of winter and genuinely enjoy exposure to the snow and cold.  Everyone wins.

Occasionally I think about the conveniences some of my contemporaries enjoy in having their children and grandchildren living in relative close proximity.  We don't have that sort of set-up.  So I prefer to think of it as having the best of both worlds.
