Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

On The Road Again - Got the Munchies?

Travel, Roadside Curiosities

You know you've reached the south when you see your first Waffle House.

I've always considered Waffle House to be the Confederate version of George Webb.

With grits.

I happen to like grits.

My introduction to this delicacy was on the very first road trip I made through the south oh so many decades ago.

Grits are difficult to come by in Tosa. Although you will find them on the menu over at Maxie's.

Anyway, grits are ubiquitous when you've traveled south of the Mason-Dixon Line and prepared all sorts of different ways.  If you want to give your cardiologist fits I recommend that you have the cheese grits.

There's something else you'll find in these parts that isn't to be found in Tosa.

If you stop for gas and you need a snack don't reach for a bag of chips.

Every gas station, convenience store and bait shop sells fresh boiled peanuts.

You'll find a slow-cooker of them usually next to the coffee.  Sometimes a couple of varieties.

Grab a big cup of these guys to-go.

Yum!
