Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

The Garden Chronicles

Gardening

I'm feeling better about the garden with every passing day.  After that close brush with the cucumber beetles things seem to have settled into a routine with everything putting down roots and growing.

Radishes are done for the time being.  The watermelons were reseeded following the beetle invasion but I'm of the opinion they're not going to have enough time to produce.  The spuds are flourishing, beets are struggling, three varieties of lettuces are becoming salads, tomatoes are producing little green fruits and something killed the kale.  It just up and died unexpectedly.

The green beans and squash are blooming and both the pie and jack-o-lantern pumpkins aren't very far behind.

The broccoli is producing

I have onions as big as baseballs

Scads of peas

Spinach is new to this year's line-up

The weather certainly has warmed-up but it has been dry as a bone.  Irrigating every early morning is what's keeping everything afloat.

Sure could use some rain...
