Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

Deer Camp Dispatch - Porkulus

Girlfriend, Hunt'n, Friends, Life Is Good

Things were looking rather grim this morning.  Gray skies, 40 degrees and rain.

Vast flocks of cranes flying overhead and raising a heckuva racket as they staged for their winter migration.

No whitetails though.

A steady rain drove us in by 9 AM.

Busying ourselves with breakfast and the drying of gear and guns - by the time noon rolled-around the clouds began to break-up, the sun peeked out and the temperature rose above 50.

Lawyer, Braumeister and I took Girlfriend out for a long walk.

Others napped.

The dog did her part flushing five woodcock for us but we never had a chance to get a gun up to drop one in the heavy cover.

As I am tapping-out this post there is one Labrador retriever completely sacked-out in front of the fireplace - periodically making little puppy yips in her sleep.

I spent the last couple of hours of daylight still-hunting a tree plantation, slow and quiet, while everyone else sat.  It was gorgeous out there.

So what's with the porkulus?

Well - with no deer to butcher - Sid ran to the nearest small town butcher shop and returned with side pork, a pork roast, some country style pork ribs and pork sausage.  And he cooked it all afternoon in a dutch oven with homemade sauerkraut and homegrown onions.  And then he dished it up with smashed Yukon Gold potatoes from the garden.

It was mighty tasty.

Even lousy hunters know enough to shop...
