Sucked into last-minute shopping at the mall

mall, shopping, holidays, Christmas

I told myself I wouldn't go to Mayfair, not two days before Christmas. I won't, I won't... but I did. I wasn't done shopping for the Big Day yet, believe it or not.

I have never seen so many people in one place. I don't know how the clerks can handle it... also us hot, cranky, impatient shoppers asking questions like this one I pulled out of my sleeve:

"Are you SURE this is a real leather purse?" I suspiciously queried the clerk.

Poor woman. She managed a cheery smile as she answered my silly questions.

Then there was the woman at the Wrapsody scarf kiosk, who was draped in exotic-looking scarves but happily showed me all the different styles, how to tie them around my  neck and what the word "Pashtak" (?) meant (something about the neck hair of the goat). So I bought a $20 scarf from her but not just because she was friendly - seriously, I'm not THAT gullible.

Then my quest for a present for my son sent me to a department store that reeked of perfume to the point of asphyxiation. I only knew what my son wanted because he named two things: a wallet and a PS3. Guess which one I bought him?

I ducked up to Barnes & Noble to use their bathroom, and on my way out, right before my eyes on the bookshelf I spied the book I had been wanting to buy for weeks: "Stillness Speaks" by Eckhart Tolle. I stood still, staring at the cover. It was 17 bucks. Just couldn't do it. I had more presents to buy!

Finally I thought about a present for the high-maintenance child No. 3. There will never be too many gifts nor not enough time in which to hunt them down, in her opinion. The girl doesn't know that it takes me on average a day of hard labor to pay for one forgettable pair of winter boots that she just has to have or life isn't worth living anymore.

Ahhh, the holidays. What a joyous time of year. Oh, the memories we make - and the stress we create!
