Both Sides of the Fence

A Tosa resident since 1991, Christine walks the dog, cooks but avoids housework, writes and reads, and enjoys the company of friends and strangers. Her job takes her around the state, learning about people's health. A Quaker (no, they don't wear blue hats or sell oatmeal or motor oil), she has been known to stand on both sides of the political and philosophic fence at the same time, which is very uncomfortable when you think about it. She writes about pretty much whatever stops in to visit her busy mind at the moment. One reader described her as "incredibly opinionated but not judgmental." That sounds like a good thing to strive for!

Imagining a new year

New Year, Habitat for Humanity

A day or so after Christmas and driving on Underwood Creek Parkway, I saw people trying out new skis and snowshoes on the Hansen Golf Course. Nearby, kids were sledding. What a great way to start out a new year: in nature, and close by.

What a wonderful place we live in! So many opportunities to lead a wholesome, happy, life here.

And what good people live here. Last week, WauwatosaNow ran an article about an interfaith effort  to build a new Habitat for Humanity home for a Milwaukee family. The local church members hail from Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist, Christ King Parish, and St. Pius X Parish. This is the tenth such effort by the Methodists who spearheaded the effort. And they'll be doing it again next year.

What could be better? Well, maybe it's pushing. But Milwaukee is one of the most segregated communities in the country. And the only good way to change that is to live among each other. I know Habitat selects areas in which to build. But wouldn't it be nice if the next home could be built in Wauwatosa?

I can't think of a better place to keep a home and raise good kids. Someplace where they can walk to a good school and sled down a hill without fear of being run over by trucks or crime. All kids should have that.

Shouldn't they?
