Life in the wilds of Wauwatosa can be cruel sometimes.

Take - for instance - the nest that the mourning doves built on a tiny ledge of my neighbor's house.  Mourning doves aren't very bright and their nests are notoriously flimsy.  This one in particular was ill-conceived and poorly concealed.  Last week I returned from the day job to find a crow dining on the last of the baby doves in the middle of my driveway.

Mama robin built a nest on the angled portion of the gutter downspout.

We've been watching her feeding her growing brood daily.

Yesterday morning the nest and its occupants was gone.  My guess?  A marauding raccoon recently spied in the neighborhood.

As of this morning the family occupying the hanging basket is doing fine...
