Both Sides of the Fence

A Tosa resident since 1991, Christine walks the dog, cooks but avoids housework, writes and reads, and enjoys the company of friends and strangers. Her job takes her around the state, learning about people's health. A Quaker (no, they don't wear blue hats or sell oatmeal or motor oil), she has been known to stand on both sides of the political and philosophic fence at the same time, which is very uncomfortable when you think about it. She writes about pretty much whatever stops in to visit her busy mind at the moment. One reader described her as "incredibly opinionated but not judgmental." That sounds like a good thing to strive for!

Just say no to ugly communications towers

It's unfashionable to question anything that has the word "security" attached to it.

So I won't ask whether the city needs a security tower to house cameras turned on Hart Park, the water tower, and city hall, even if I might wonder why. Which I do. But I digress.

Whether it's a flag-pole-like "monopole" or an Eiffel-tower-like tripod pole, you can bet the standard variety is not going to be pretty. Not something you'd want in your back yard. The question the council is grappling with is ugly or uglier. But it doesn't have to be that way.

This tower in Hamburg, Germany, was built in 1968 atop a rotating restaurant.

This tower's in Kuala Lampur.

Maybe most suitable for Milwaukee is a tower by  the architect Calatrava, who designed the Milwaukee Art Museum and this communication tower for Barcelona.

If something is important and necessary, shouldn't we honor it by making it durable and beautiful?

I'd go for something Dr. Seuss-y, all twisty and colorful.
