Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

The Garden Chronicles

Gardening

The garden is growing like mad.  Very jungle-like. We've been blessed with more than twice the normal amount of rainfall for the month of June.  There has been no need to water so the initial plans for a drip irrigation system have been shelved.

Plenty of rain, no problems with bugs or larger critters and plenty of hot, hot weather.  It has  been remarkably easy sailing so far.

Already we've enjoyed asparagus, lettuce and radishes. There are tomatoes on the vine, Swiss chard and collard greens literally growing by the day.  Parsnips and Chinese cabbage were sown in the last week. There is a big crop of peas ready to be picked.

The cabbages are really coming along and last week I sowed another row for later this year.

The only disappointment was the spinach.  Just about the time it was ready to pick it turned yellow.  Very quickly.

You can see it here beginning to bolt.  I'm removing it tomorrow and will replant later this growing season.

This is the same spinach variety I've always grown and I've never had any problems before.

I have my suspicions.  What gives?
