Season II starts in GMC football

Published on: 9/8/2010

Like most schools, Greater Metro Conference teams play two non-conference games to start the season. That's season I.

The regular conference season is the most important part of any football team's schedule, because if they aren't successful, then Season III, the playoffs, isn't going to happen.

In Brookfield, both Central and East went 2-0. The talented Lancers beat a talented Oak Creek team in their second non-conference game and that might have sent a message to the rest of the GMC. Except now BC won't sneak up on anyone.

East outscored two teams, 73-7, and you can't argue with those numbers. Grafton and Waukesha North aren't going anywhere, but the improvement in the Spartans' offense and defense was obvious.

They both open against strong foes and two of the three pre-season favorites. Central travels to Menomonee Falls Friday night. The Indians, who lost several key players to graduation, are 0-2, but coach John Baker will have them ready to play. It is also Hall of Fame night, so the Falls will be rockin.'

The Spartans are at home to host a strong running, good defensive Hamilton team. If East can be competitive against the Chargers, it will go a long way towards letting their fans know what to expect this year according to coach Tom Swittel. The defense has done an excellent job so far and the Jonathan Lehman to CJ Gregg passing combo has been fun to watch.

Wauwatosa East has lost two different games - getting crushed 34-7 by Cudahy in the opener and then playing an excellent defensive game in a 9-0 road loss to Nicolet.

The Raiders host a 1-1 West Hale team, which also has a new coach in Sean Hegarty, at Hart Park. First-year coach Jake Wolter needs to get his offense going.

Tosa West, which plays more conference games in the Woodland, got Season II started last week, since the Trojans play only one non-conference game to start the year. They scored 40 points in the second half against St. Thomas More for a 40-0 win.

They host New Berlin West on Friday at 7 p.m. New Berlin West lost to South Milwaukee and Whitnall to open their season.

Brookfield Central freshman runner Elizabeth Flatley beat out two outstanding senior runners - Jenna McMiller of Waukesha North and her teammate Hannah Trasser to win the Bulldog Invite cross country meet last Friday at McCarty Park.
