A look at two Baseball Sectional

Published on: 7/14/2011

Let's take a look at two upcoming sectionals which my Brookfield, New Berlin and Wauwatosa schools are in.

Brookfield East is the third seed and Brookfield Central the fourth seed in the Germantown Sectional. East hosts sixth-seeded Sussex Hamilton on July 19, a team they beat 11-1 and 13-3. But the Spartans might be without star pitcher Brian Sylla, who has been struggling with a sore arm.

Central will host fifth-seeded Germantown, a team they were scheduled to play Friday. I'm sure neither team will show very little to the other on Friday.

Top-seeded Menomonee Falls has struggled lately but they should beat eighth-seeded Slinger. No. 2 seeded Arrowhead hosts seventh-seeded Pewaukee.

Any of these top four teams have a good chance to advance, especially East if Sylla is healthy. It is anyone's sectional to win and I find it hard to pick a winner.

The Lancers recently beat Falls and Brook East twice in the last two weeks, so I like their chances along with Arrowhead (19-7), who has a six game winning streak going. But the Spartans are a team to watch as well as an overachieving Falls team.

See I'm not much help. It's wide open.

On the other side of the bracket top seeded in the New Berlin West bracket,  New Berlin Eisenhower, the Woodland Conference Black Division champion and one of the top teams in the area, should play the No. 2 seed Marquette in the finals, as they both are on a roll and the Hilltoppers live for this time of the year.

Ike plays an 8th-seeded West Allis Central team that has one win this year, so look for coach Scott Schimmel to call off the dogs early in that game.

Finally Marquette hosts seventh seeded Tosa East, a team that had the Hilltoppers on the ropes before a 4-run seventh did them in recently, proving anything can happen.

Fourth-seeded Pius meets fifth-seeded West Allis Hale, but the Huskies have one of the best SP around in Dillion Engle, so anything can happen when he takes the mound.

In the lower half of the bracket, No. 3 seeded New Berlin West, the WC Blue Division champions host an improved Tosa West team. Both of those teams play today (Thursday) with more on the line for the Trojans as they battle to get to .500. Once again, no secrets will be let out of the bag since they open the playoffs with each other.

This one is easier to call. I see Ike getting to the finals and I think a Marquette/NB West second-round match-up could be a thriller.

Ike seems to have everything a team needs to make it to state, but it won't be easy with MUHS or arch-rival NB West waiting in the finals.
