Big weekend for Woodland, GMC teams

Published on: 10/14/2011

There is plenty of action on tap - can I say that in a prep blug? - tonight and Saturday? Let's take a look.

Kicking off the weekend is the Woodland Conference Cross Country Championship - look for Shorewood boys and either the Greyhound girls or Pewaukee girls as the favorites.

Junior Patrick Campbell of Wauwatosa West should be a contender to win the boys race.

Tonight, Brookfield Central's football team will host Menomonee Falls at 7 p.m. The Lancers need a win to share the Greater Metro Conference title and the Indians need a win to clinch a title tie! NOW sports writer Steve Tietz will be covering the event.

Brookfield East will be trying to right the ship and head into the post-season on a positive not, as they travel to Sussex Hamilton. East has lost two of three while the Chargers need a win to share the title.

Wauwatosa East travels to West Allis Hale in a game that is HUGE for both teams. Each are 0-6 in GMC play and the winner avoids last place.

Tosa West ends the season by hosting S. Francis in a homecoming game and my money - if I had any - would be on the Trojans to beat the Mariners in an emotional game.

New Berlin Eisenhower hosts Brown Deer as the battle of Woodland Conference Black and Blue Division's second-place teams meets.

New Berlin West will have its hands full when the Vikings travel to Greenfield (4-3), which will be trying to clinch a post-season berth for sure.  If the Hustlin' Hawks win, they are in, no questions asked. If they lose and go 4-4, it's up to the WIAA to make a decision.

Of course, state individual tennis is going on and Brookfield Central and East still have individuals and doubles teams alive as I write this.

Then on Saturday, the girls volleyball GMC teams and Woodland teams have their conference tournaments going at Brookfield East and at Center Court Sports Complex in Waukesha, respectively.

Then at 11 a.m. (girls) and 11:45 a.m. (boys) at Mitchell Park in Brookfield. I like the Lancer girls to win it and the Central, Tosa East and Marquette to battle for the boys title.

Oh, yeah, there is also some baseball team playing on Sunday.
