School Board opts for Open Enrollment over Chapter 220 students

Nov. 26, 2010

The Wauwatosa School Board on Monday voted not to accept any new Chapter 220 students for the 2011-12 school year, but it will continue to accept Open Enrollment students as space allows.

Wauwatosa has 233 students attending its schools via Chapter 220, a state program that allows Milwaukee students to attend suburban districts. However, Wauwatosa might not be able to accept new Chapter 220 students in future years anyway, since the district likely will surpass 30 percent minority enrollment this school year, the cutoff for accepting new Chapter 220 students.

The Chapter 220 students currently in the district will not be affected by the change.

For 2011-12, the district will use Open Enrollment seats to fill classes to prescribed levels - 18 students in 4- and 5-year-old kindergarten classes, 20 in grades one through five and 23 in the core classes in middle and high school.

Most of the seats likely will be available in the elementary school grades. Wauwatosa has 1,125 Open Enrollment students this year.
