Raiders improving, but Central dominates

Oct. 7, 2011

Friday night’s Greater Metro Conference matchup between Brookfield Central and Wauwatosa East was a harder fought game than the 48-13 score line would indicate.

Despite the loss, Tosa East showed many positives. The Raiders, now 0-6 in conference play and 1-7 overall, rushed for 106 yards and sophomore Quarterback Christian Tolbert passed for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

“He’s done great,” said Raiders coach Jake Wolter. “He came up from JV because our starting quarterback was injured. On the first (touchdown pass) on the pre-snap, we were yelling for him to throw to someone else, but he threw to our old quarterback (Kyle Vnuk), who was pretty well defended, but he’s a bigger kid who could jump up and make the catch. The second one was a nice catch by Vince Cupertino.”

The Lancers offense didn’t miss a beat during the game and jumped out to a 21-0 lead three minutes before halftime on a touchdown run from Jason Meichtry in the first quarter and two from DeMario Harris in the second. The Raiders managed their first touchdown two minutes later after a long pass from Tolbert to Cupertino for a 34-yard pick up, and a well placed touchdown pass that found its way into the hands of Vnuk despite good coverage from Brookfield Central.

The Lancers found the end zone a mere 58 seconds later to halt any momentum that the Raiders may have gained going into halftime, connecting on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Meichtry to Robert Rossmiller.

Meichtry, who also kicks and punts for the Lancers, directly scored 12 of the Lancers’ points on five extra points and a touchdown run to open the scoring, in addition to the touchdown pass to Rossmiller.

“I don’t kick during the week,” said Meichtry. “I have to stay healthy. Our practices are focused and they are productive and that helps a lot. It’s not just me; we have lots of leaders on the field.”

The Lancers picked up in the second half where they had left off in the first, scoring on another touchdown run from Harris. The Raiders nearly responded after converting a fourth down and gaining yards off a facemask penalty on Central, but a pass from Tolbert into the end zone was picked off by Chris DuBois to keep Central’s lead comfortable.

Craig Jordan and Marcus Crum rounded off the scoring for the Lancers with two more touchdown runs before Cupertino caught Tolbert’s second touchdown pass of the game for the Raiders.

“We did well on defense managing the game and then on offense threatening with the pass,” said Lancers coach Jamie Meulemans. “We have a championship defense and a championship offense, so the question is putting it all together. Our goal tonight was to play a perfect game. It wasn’t perfect and we have things to work on but we did well.”

The win keeps Brookfield Central on pace with Marquette and Sussex Hamilton for first place in the conference. All three teams are 5-1, having beaten up on each other for the lone losses of the year.

Hamilton plays Brookfield East next week, Marquette hosts West Allis Central and the Lancers host Menomonee Falls.

“All respect to our conference,” said Meulemans. “We’ve got great teams week in and week out.”

Wauwatosa East will look to pick up a win against West Allis Hale next week at Hale.

“We’re on the rise,” said Wolter. “People can look at our record and say we’re not good again, but if you look at our scores this year, you’ll see that we are in the ball games, and we have a lot of young kids who can do well in the future.”
