The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County, headquartered in Wauwatosa, is seeing less money being dropped in its Red Kettles. Officials are going high-tech to make it more convenient for people to give this holiday season.
People without cash on hand can now use their smart phones to make a donation by scanning QR codes at the kettles.
The local branch of the Salvation Army is trying to raise $2.7 million to sustain its programs, from holiday toys and family feasts to year-round emergency shelters, food pantries and care for veterans, through the next year. So far the Red Kettle campaign is $15,000 behind what it had taken in by this time last year, the organization reports.
