Moldenhauer drops out of mayoral race

Dec. 28, 2011

One of the candidates for Wauwatosa mayor has dropped out of the race, but he's decided to run for a seat on the Common Council instead.

Jim Moldenhauer turned in papers today to withdraw from contention for mayor, Deputy City Clerk Susan Van Hoven said.

With Kathy Ehley, executive director of the Village Business Improvement District, declaring her candidacy for mayor last week, it brought the number of residents running to four.

"Mainly with Kathy joining the race, I came to a conclusion this was basically going to be a shoot-out and gobs of money were going to be spent, so all would be better served if I stepped aside," Moldenhauer said.

Alderman Peter Donegan and John Pokrandt, an account manager for a commercial printer, also are seeking the mayor's seat. With the field narrowed to three candidates, there will still need to be a primary election.

Moldenhauer said he will need to review each of the remaining three mayoral candidates' platforms before throwing his support behind any one of them.

"I'm hoping they come out with a comprehensive platform similar to what I have done," he said.

Moldenhauer will stick to his six-point plan even as he changes his goal to winning the 1st District council seat.

"Those are going to be the issues for my aldermanic campaign as well," he said.

Moldenhauer's decision to run for council means the District 1 race will be a contested one.

Jeff Kroll, a lifelong Wauwatosa resident, also is running to represent the district on Tosa's east side. He works as a professor at Waukesha County Technical College.

Kroll was out of town for the holidays and unable to immediately provide comment.

District 1 incumbent Linda Nikcevich isn't seeking re-election.
