North Avenue Grill in Wauwatosa sold
News and notes on the restaurant scene from dining critic Carol Deptolla
North Avenue Grill in Wauwatosa will be operating under a new owner, come late January.
Mike Topolovich bought the diner at 7225 W. North Ave. from business partners Jon Anne Willow and Patti Wenzel, they announced today.
Topolovich has cooked for years at John's Sandwich shop in Wauwatosa and at the Hideaway in Franklin before launching his own place.
"If you think classic American diner with high-quality ingredients, that's what I'm shooting for," he said.
The current owners will operate the restaurant through Jan. 13, open until 8 tonight and Saturday night, then open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Jan. 11, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 12 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 13.
It will close for a couple of weeks for the changeover. Topolovich said North Avenue Grill could reopen as soon as Jan. 22, barring delays.
He's installing a fryer in the kitchen so he can serve fish fry on Fridays, and is adding diner classics to the menu. The restaurant will serve breakfast all day and continue to have gluten-free dishes.
He's planning to add sandwiches such as a club with roasted turkey and avocado with roasted garlic-black pepper mayonnaise, cheesesteak and Buffalo chicken. Besides cod, perch, shrimp and walleye for the fish fry, Topolovich plans to offer rotating fish specials on Fridays.
Hours will be 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays once the restaurant reopens under the new owner.
