FRA puts train quiet zone application on hold

July 19, 2013

Wauwatosa's application to allow trains to pass through the city without sounding their horns at railroad crossings has been put on hold, city officials announced in a written statement today.

The city's quiet zone status for the Canadian Pacific rail crossings expired June 24, and the Federal Railroad Administration did not process the waiver necessary to extend the quiet zones.

The FRA requires trains to sound their horns as they approach intersections, unless a waiver is granted based on the existance of sufficient safety measures to prevent drivers from ending up in the path of an oncoming train.

The city has several crossings that qualified for temporary waivers, making them quiet zones. But, the city has several crossings that did not previously meet the FRA criterion for automatic approval of a quiet zone, the city said.

The city's recent application seeks approval for enhanced safety measures at those crossings.

FRA officials have asked the city to provide more information. In response, Tosa has retained a consulting engineer to immediately begin obtaining the requested information and expedite submission to the FRA, today's statement says.
