Mayfair Applebee's closes after 24 years in business

The Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurant at Mayfair Mall has closed after 24 years in business.
Applebee's and Mayfair couldn't reach a renewal agreement "that made sense for both parties," so the restaurant at 2500 N. Mayfair Road was closed at midnight Tuesday, the company said Wednesday.
An announcement that the Mayfair Applebee's would close actually was made more than a year ago. Back then, the dining chain said the restaurant would close June 30, 2013. Ann Watson, a spokeswoman for Applebee's/Apple Hospitality Group, said Wednesday she didn't have information on why the restaurant stayed in business more than a year after it originally had been set to close.
The mall's general manager couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.
Watson did not know how many employees worked at the restaurant, but said the company was committed to transferring as many as possible to other Applebee's locations. The nearest are at 2865 S. 108th St. in West Allis and 6750 W. State St. in Wauwatosa.
Apple Hospitality Group operates 36 Applebee's restaurants in Wisconsin.
The chain also recently closed an Applebee's in the Town of Brookfield to make way for a retail development project known as The Corners. Watson said it's possible an Applebee's could become part of that project.
The Corners, which is being developed by Marcus Corp. near W. Blue Mound and Barker roads, will be anchored by a 140, 000-square-foot Von Maur department store. It will include dozens of additional commercial tenants, totaling about 250, 000 square feet, and 150 apartments.
Earler this summer, Applebee's filed plans with the Glendale Community Development Authority to build a 4,000-square-foot stand-alone restaurant at Bayshore Town Center.

Lands' End names new chief marketing officer
Lands' End Inc. on Tuesday said it has promoted a longtime executive to chief marketing officer, quickly filling a post left vacant a month ago.
Named to the position, and to an executive vice president slot, is Becky Gebhardt, formerly chief creative officer with the Dodgeville-based retailer. Gebhardt has been with Lands' End since 1991.
In her new role — a critical one for any retailer — Gebhardt succeeds Steven Rado, whose resignation was disclosed last month in a filing with securities regulators. No reason was given for Rado's departure. Lands' End said in the filing that it planned to search externally for a replacement.
The firm also said Tuesday that it has hired Mike Zhang as vice president for e-commerce, digital marketing and innovation, and promoted Mike Holahan to senior vice president for multichannel marketing. Both men will report to Gebhardt.
