Wauwatosa West girls track team returns plenty of talent
McLin, Ndon, Horton should key successful season
According to coach Jack LoPresti, the 2016 edition of the Wauwatosa West girls track and field team looks to be one of the most exciting teams in the area.
Three of the reasons for that are seniors Azya McLin, Mercy Ndon and Brianna Horton.
"All three athletes bring experience, competitiveness and determination to our 100 dash, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay, 200 dash and hurdle events," an excited LoPresti said.
Last season, Mclin, Ndon, Horton and junior Cheri'A Adams won the 4x100 relay at the state meet. This year, all four athletes come back looking to build on last season's success.
In addition to those four athletes, senior Anna Roghan returns after being the leader of the distance corps for the last couple of years.
"Anna is healthy and ready to make big impact," LoPresti said. "She will have a great young group around her this spring.
"In addition to our super sprinters last year, Kayla Crump, Jade Tanjung and Ashley Salomone were all excellent sprinters for us in the 100, 200 and 400, and we will benefit from their experience this season."
The Trojans have several returnees in the jump events, led by Adams, the school record holder in the triple jump; Horton; and sophomore Brianna Weigman, "an excellent high jumper."
Hurdles will be solid, anchored by Horton and Crump.
"Crump, our super sophomore, is back and ready for an excellent sophomore season," LoPresti said. "There are also several newcomers who are ready to make their mark in the hurdles.
"As for the throws (shot put, discus), we will be a younger group this spring, but we will have a few athletes keeping things solid in throws."
The list of coaching assignments follows: the boys coach, Scott Jordan (throws), Andy Schmeling (jumps), Grace Shelstad (jumps), Jason Hood (sprints), Kaya Senaya (sprints), Brianna Jury (hurdles), Andrew Barthel (pole vault) and LoPresti (distance).
