April 5, 2016

It was a busy week for the Wauwatosa East track and field team, which began with a first-place finish at the 10-team Dino Dash on March 30 at South Division.

Tosa East won easily with 102 points, well ahead of King (60) and Riverside (47). They were followed by Pulaski and Bay View (26 each), Vincent (25), Marshall (14), St. Anthony (7) and South Division and Bradley Tech (tied with 2 each).

Leading the way for the Red Raiders were several top-three finishes.

There were four winners: Cora Vogt in the 1,600 meters (6 minutes, 44 seconds), Amara Green in the 800 (2:51), Dom Evans in the triple jump (29 feet, 41/2 inches) and the 4x400 relay of Kacy Fisher, Katie Gastrau, Green and Evans (4:46).

Second-place finishes went to Cyntayla Glass in the 55 hurdles (10.3), Brooklyn Blackburn in the 55 dash (7.5), Nastia Roeder in the 1,600 (6:45) and Ginger Wrensch in the triple jump (24-63/4). The 4x100 relay also took second (1:34.4) behind Blackburn, Hannah Brooks, Gastrau and Toni Bonds.

Four third-place finishes went to Fisher in the 400 (1:09.0), Ashley Wurster in the triple jump (23-1), Bonds in the long jump (14-91/2) and Rebekah Przybyl in the shot put (27-9).

"This was a great meet to get everyone on the team involved," coach Glen Gardiner said. "We were pretty depleted because of spring break, but the girls that were in town had a good showing."

Case Classic

The girls finished tied for seventh (44 points) at the 12-team Racine Case Classic on April 2 at UW-Parkside.

Top finishers at the meet follow.

The 4x400 relay of Dom Evans, Bonds, Gastrau and Fisher took first (4:19.20) with a time that ranked 11th in latest D1 state honor roll.

Fisher had an indoor personal record 2:27.19 in the 800, which is ranked 15th in state.

Brooklyn Blackburn had a good day in the 55 hurdles, finishing fourth (9.42, 13th-ranked), including a 9.10 in the prelims. Blackburn was also fourth in the high jump (4-8).

Dom Evans took second with a personal indoor record (1:06.22) in the 400, and Elsa Klein was fifth in the 1,600 (6:09.15, PR).

"Making the final preparations for the Greater Metro Conference meet on Tuesday (April 5), the goal is always to be in the top three; the coaches are optimistic the girls can make that happen," Gardiner said looking ahead. "This was our last indoor meet on a 200-meter track and a great opportunity to run fast times before we get to the GMC."
