Wauwatosa West girls soccer team shuts out Kenosha Bradford in season opener

Big second half keys easy victory

April 13, 2016

The Wauwatosa West girls soccer team kicked off the season with an impressive 5-0 victory over Kenosha Bradford on April 5 at Whitman Field.

The Trojans got off to a slow start, but then everything fell into play.

"We were able to take control despite missing some easy chances and playing for the first time this season," coach Ryan Bailey said. "It took us 15 minutes to settle down and get acclimated to each other again due to the layoff of spring break."

Erin Schaut opened the scoring on a 20-yard strike into the top corner.

"It showed the confidence she has in going forward from the midfield," Bailey said. "We took a 1-0 lead to half even though we forfeited chances to put the game away."

The second goal was scored in the 54th minute when Kate Murphy scored on a switching ball by Chloe Pepke. Then in the 72nd minute, Gaby Zabala took a punt from Marley Eckblad and split her defenders as she calmly chipped their keeper for a 3-0 lead.

West then added two goals to put the game away. Irene Phillips scored her first career goal quickly in the 73rd minute, following an unselfish play by Lindsay Starrett that set Phillips up with a tap in from the 6-yard box.

Then in the 81st minute, Emily O'Connell finished off the scoring on a ball by Lauren Mayer. O'Connell carried into the box, rounded the keeper and passed it into the open net.

"We were the better team but still had errors that need to be corrected," Bailey said.
