Wauwatosa West girls soccer team drops Pewaukee, Shorewood

Highly-ranked Brookfield Central blanks Trojans to end week

April 20, 2016

The Wauwatosa West girls soccer team went 2-1 last week, winning two Woodland Conference matches and losing to highly-ranked Brookfield Central.

They opened by beating the Pirates, 2-1, at Pewaukee on April 12.

Emily O'Connell scored to give West a 2-1 lead on a pass from Gaby Zabala.

In the second half, Zabala scored the winner on a ball from Anna Ganser.

"What a way to start conference by going to the defending champions (Pewaukee) and leaving 1-0 in the Woodland," coach Ryan Bailey said. "It is outstanding to take control of our conference season in the first week. However, we know we must treat each team on our schedule as a conference championship game."

It was Zabala who got the Trojans off to a quick start at Shorewood, scoring in the third minute to grasp hold of the game. Although Shorewood was able to be extremely disruptive, West did not give up any dangerous chances.

Kate Murphy doubled the lead just before half on a ball by Zabala.

"We were able to rotate many players through in the second half and keep the clean sheet as our conference record improved to 2-0 and 3-0 overall," Bailey said.

The Trojans closed out the week with 4-0 nonconference loss to Brookfield Central on April 15.

"With it being our third game in four days, we were fatigued, and our play showed that," Bailey said. "Central controlled the tempo and showed why they are a top-five team in the state. We learned what we need to work on to continue building to be a championship team."
