EAST SOFTBALL

It was a tough week for the Wauwatosa East softball team, as the Red Raiders did not get off to the start that coach Ed Rauewas hoping for.

The Red Raiders started 0-4 and were outscored, 46-7, last week.

They opened by losing to Kettle Moraine, 14-4, on April 11 at home, scoring all their runs in a four-run second inning to cut the score to 6-4.

"Not the start we wanted," Raue said. "We looked young and unsettled, which we are. Five pitches in, we were down 2-0. Couple of great battles went their way, and we were a near great catch by (Natalie) Yahn away from getting out of the first, allowing only one run. She couldn't come up with the catch, and they went on to score five runs."

"Analiese Glawemade her first career start and threw the ball well, but we couldn't make the big play to help her out of a couple jams. The bats never showed up, but I think that was a credit to KM, not our inability."

Divine Savior Holy Angels then handed East a 10-1 loss on April 12 using a four-run fourth and a three-run sixth to ice the game. The Dashers smashed out 27 hits against the Red Raiders.

Cora Bilitztossed a seven-inning complete game, walking one and fanning two, and went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Morgan Schmanskiadded a single, double and an RBI.

"Cora pitched a heck of a game," Raue said. "We have a brand-new infield, and that unfamiliarity got us a couple times, and the talented DS team took advantage."

Raue was impressed with his team's approach at the plate.

"We had great at-bats. Facing the GMC POY in (Rose) Dentice, I felt we did a great job," he said. "We had some hard hits; doubles by Yahn, Allie Kuhnand Morgan showed we have the ability to hit the areas best. Cora hit the ball well, and Taylor (Cure) walked four times. Again, I loved our approach, but we need to have that same confidence and focus on the defensive side."

Eisenhower ace McKenna Heitpas blanked East, 10-0, on April 13 at Eisenhower. Schmanski had two hits, and starting pitcher Analiese Glawepitched 42/3, allowing 10 hits, one walk and two strikeouts and added a double in two at-bats at the plate.

"We hit the ball hard but right at people," Raue said. "I liked the way we handled the challenge against another solid pitcher, but our defense continued to struggle. We managed six hits. Morgan had two, and Analiese had a double off the fence, but as been the case thus far, we can't string the hits together."

Menomonee Falls then won a 12-2 decision on April 14 at East, giving the Red Raiders an 0-2 mark in the Greater Metro Conference. Losing, 2-1, through two innings, East saw Falls score two, four and four runs in the third through fifth innings to take a 12-2 lead.

Natalie Yahnsingled, doubled, scored a run and drove in a run, while Schmanski singled, doubled and drove in a run.

Three freshmen collected their first career hits during the week: Glawe, Shea Murphyand Riley Breider.
