The Wauwatosa West boys tennis team had a busy week, losing twice in dual meets before going 3-1 in the Raider/Trojan Invitational over the weekend on April 22-23.

The Trojans opened the week with a 6-1 loss at Menomonee Falls on April 20 and a 4-3 loss to Woodland rival Greendale on April 21.

"The match vs. Menomonee Falls was disappointing," coach Kosta Zervas said. "We lost both of our three-set matches. We had opportunities in each of them, but we were unable to execute and finish off points.

"We gave away too many points with unforced errors and didn't take advantage of mistakes our opponents were giving us, and at some spots we didn't play up to our ability. That is what was most disappointing. We have to play better."

Zervas saw improvement in the Greendale match.

"We played much better in the next match, but once again, we lost a tight three-setter that would have given us the win. Conference matches are so important, and we need to approach them that way.

"I was happy with the play of our No. 1 doubles team (Quinn Barkow/Zach Schumacher) They have quietly put together some very good matches. Getting a win over Greendale is a really good result. They're having a great start to the season," Zervas said.

In the Raider/Trojan Invite, the Trojans defeated Waukesha West, 6-1, Sheboygan North, 4-3, lost to Oshkosh West, 4-3, and beat Onalaska, 4-3, in a busy two days.

"I'm beginning to see some signs of guys becoming comfortable in their positions," Zervas said. "I saw this over the weekend in the Raider/Trojan Invite. We played some super tennis, and we're starting to play consistent tennis.

"No. 3 doubles was a spot at the start of the season that had some question marks. Danny Kuehn and Jacob Lueck have solidified that position and are playing some confident doubles. They are learning to play together, under control, and are understanding what it takes to be successful.

"I'm happy with our progress. I knew we would have some growing pains (seven underclassmen) learning what it takes to win at the varsity level was going to take some time, but I see improvement each week and as a coach of a young team, that's exciting to see."
