Shoulder mount of beloved deer 'Bow Tie' to return to Milwaukee Co. Parks

May 5, 2016

After a beloved white tail dear was poached in December, Milwaukee County Parks department "has taken a negative situation and turned it into something positive," with the help of donors.

The 11-point buck — called "Bow Tie" by local outdoor enthusiasts for its white throat patch — was illegally harvested by Jason P. Elliott of Milwaukee near the Little Menomonee River Parkway in Wauwatosa Dec. 13.

Local ordinances prohibit hunting in Milwaukee County Parks. Because the deer was illegally killed, it was confiscated by authorities.

The Milwaukee County Parks department requested the deer be released to a taxidermist on behalf of the county.

A shoulder mount will be returned for display at Milwaukee County's primary environmental education center, Wehr Nature Center in Whitnall Park, where staff will use Bow Tie in interpretive educational programs for schoolchildren.

Elliott, who used a cross bow to hunt the deer, was charged with the following:

·Failure to validate or attach a deer carcass tag, which carries a fine of $1,147.50

·Hunting with an improper license, which carries a fine of $226.40

·Hunting without proper clothing, which carries a fine of $166.10
