Wauwatosa Swordfish take part in two swim meets

The Tosa Swordfish finished fourth at the SWAT Spring Fling on April 30 hosted by the South West Aquatic Team at Greenfield.

Olivia Small (9 years old) had an excellent performance qualifying for state: 50 butterfly (second, 36.77), 50 freestyle (third 34.50), 50 backstroke (fourth, 43.36) and the 50 breastroke (eighth, 52.40).

She was also part of two relays — 200 medley relay time (2:44.62) and 200 free relay (2:26.88) — that both finished fifth, along with Anna Miler (9), Zoe Kunz (10) and Samantha Bartelt (10)

Swimming in their first USA swim meet were Gabby Gagliano (11); Olivia Watters (8), who placed seventh in 25 free (23.89); Oscar Owen (8), who placed eight in 25 free (23.05); and Owen Crago (7), who placed fourth in the 25 free (25.19) and eighth in the 25 back (27.44).

Lauren Wunderlich (12 years old) in the 200 freestyle (2:29.32) had over a 5-second improvement on a previous best swim and finished 12th overall in her age group.

Bella Minihan (13) in the 100 free (1:05.92) had over a 4.5-second improvement on her previous best swim and finished 11th overall in her age group.

Sam Stolpe (14) in the 100 free (1:04.92) had over a 4.5-second improvement from the previous best swim and finished 23rd overall in the 14-plus age group.

Last weekend, the May Opener was hosted by the Waukesha Express Swim Team at Waukesha South.

The distance events were Friday night, and the sprints were Saturday. It was a yards meet.

Caleb Vollmers (16) broke his own team record Friday night for the 1000 free, dropping 9.47 seconds with a time of 11:24.84. He pulled off the tough distance double by first swimming the 500 free in 5:24.43. He placed 10th in both events.

Lauren Wunderlich (12) placed seventh in the 500 free (6:39.04), swimming in it for the first time.

On Saturday, two of the Swordfish's biggest time drops were by Bella Minahan (13) and Isabel Jensen (11). Bella dropped 8.21 seconds in the 100 fly. She finished 15th with a time of 1:21.44. Isabel dropped 13.28 seconds in her 200 freestyle, finishing in 2:40.91.

Maddie A Bartz (12) and Lauren Malinowski (12) broke their own team records. Maddie finished second in the 50 backstroke in 32.54, and Lauren finished third in the 50 fly in 29.76.
