EAST TENNIS

Wauwatosa East lost a hard-fought home match, 4-3, against Hamilton Sussex on May 2 to start the week. East lost two close three-set matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles (6-2, 4-6, 7-6).

Winning for Wauwatosa East was Michael Lockhartat No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-0), undefeated No. 3 singles Evan Christopherson(6-0, 6-0) and Alex Hayekat No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0).

East then nipped Tosa West, 4-3, on May 4 at West. With the match tied 3-3, East's No. 2 doubles team of Mitchell Weinberg-Kinsey/Jacob Muenzenberger pulled out a thrilling straight set win (7-6, 7-5) to win the meet for the Raiders.

Also winning for East was Lockhart/Liam McMahonat No. 1 doubles (6-0, 6-1), No. 3 singles Christopherson (6-2, 6-1) and No. 4 singles Alex Hayek(6-1, 6-0). Christopherson improved his season record to 10-0. Wauwatosa East's team record is 5-3.

"Against West, it is always fun to play them, and I knew the match would be close," East coach Glen Slonac said. "It was a very exciting match."

The Red Raiders lost, 7-0, on May 5 at Brookfield Central, which is ranked in the state's top 10.

"I was disappointed that we didn't play better," coach Glen Slonac said about the loss to the Lancers. "Even though Brookfield Central is a very good team, I thought we had a couple spots we could win at. Evan Christopherson lost his first match of the year."

Tosa East then finished second at the Beaver Dam Invite.

"We had some good individual performances," Slonac said. "I was very pleased to see how we were able to close out some of the matches."

No. 1 doubles Jordan Crump/Lockhart took first place, beating Waukesha West and Manitowoc in the first round and Franklin in the finals.

"It was nice to see Jordan and Michael play up to their potential," Slonac said. "They beat two very good teams."

No. 3 doubles Liam McMahon/Max Shilleralso took first, beating a good Franklin team in the semifinals in a close match and then beating Kimberly in the finals (6-2, 6-4).

"Max and Liam did a really good job, and it was nice to see our third doubles start playing more aggressive tennis and transitioning in to the net," Slonac said.

Christopherson placed second, beating Oshkosh West and Waukesha West and losing to Pewaukee in the finals.

Weinberg-Kinsey took third at No. 3 singles with wins over Beaver Dam and Oshkosh West and a loss to Pewaukee.

No. 1 singles Josh Erdtmannplayed much better tennis, taking sixth place and going 1-2 on the day. The two matches he lost were both three-set matches to Pewaukee and Manitowoc.

No. 4 singles Hayek took fourth place.

"Alex was a little disappointed with his finish," Slonac said. "He lost a match in the semifinals to Oshkosh West in a very close match, losing in a match tiebreaker.

Second doubles Muenzenberger/Sam Kodzikdidn't place (0-2), losing to a good Franklin team in the first round and then losing in the consolation round.

"Overall, we had a pretty good week," Slonac said. "I have been seeing improvement in some of the areas of concern, such as our serving. We have been doing better on reducing our double faults. The team is also improving in the area of transition game from the baseline to the net. We also continue to have our seniors on our team perform well."

EAST GIRLS TRACK/FIELD

Wauwatosa East finished seventh of eight teams at the Greater Metro Conference Relays on May 4 at West Allis Hale.

Brookfield East (113), Brookfield Central (99), Hamilton (89), Menomonee Falls (58), West Allis Hale (55) and Divine Savior Holy Angels (48.50) finished ahead of the Red Raiders (45.50 8), and West Allis Central (1) finished last.

The 300-meter hurdles relay was second in 2 minutes, 35.57 seconds behind Zoe Schertz(50.87), Abby Wood(52.09) and Dominique Evans(52.61).

The long jump relay was third in (45-feet, 91/4inches) behind Wood (15-81/4), Olivia Metz(15-2) and Toni Bonds(14-11).

The distance medley was fourth in 13:49.04 (Evans, Amara Green, Janet Fee, Andrea Mabie), and the pole vault relay was fourth (20-6) behind Molly Devine(7-6), Alice Farr(7-0) and Addison Devine(6-0).

The 300 shuttle hurdle was fifth in 55.29 seconds (Wood, Schertz, Cyntayla Glass), as was the 4x100 relay in 54.26 seconds (Trinity Mayes, Neshae Morries-Thurman, Chloe Tome, Metz).

Three other fifth-place finishes came from the 4x1600 relay in 25:35.20 behind Elsa Klein, Cora Vogt, Malia Bavuso and Yvette Danisewicz; the 4x200 relay in 1:55.04 behind Hannah Brooks, Melina Paul, Katie Gastrau and Bonds; and the 4x800 relay in 10:58.03 with Mabie, Fee, Farr and Green.

The shot put relay was sixth (76-feet, 2 inches) behind Rebekah Przybyl(29-4), Amanda Patterson(24-7) and Jenna Moerchen(22-3), and the discus throw was sixth (213-61/2) with Przybyl (81-91/2), Morries-Thurman (68-11) and Moerchen (62-10).

The triple jump finished sixth (80-43/4) with Evans (27-7), Ashley Wurster (26-93/4) and Aidan Schertz (26-0).

The 800 sprint medley finished seventh in 2:05.72 (Metz, Mayes, Morries-Thurman, Aidan Schertz), and the 4x400 relay was seventh in 4:25.87 (Bonds, Brooks, Paul, Gastrau).

EAST BOYS TRACK/FIELD

After taking third in the Greater Metro Conference Relays on May 4 at West Allis Hale (see cover story), the Wauwatosa East boys track and field team took part in the Myrhum Invite on May 7 at Hartland Arrowhead.

Sam Potterwas fourth in the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 43.32 seconds.

Jack Sveumwas the other Tosa East entry, taking 16th in the 3,200 (10:14.19).
