Wauwatosa apartment fire causes $40,000 in damage, no injuries reported

Wauwatosa emergency crews responded to a fire at an eight-family apartment building May 12.

The Wauwatosa Fire Department received a 911 call reporting an apartment fire at 2429 N. 111th St., around 8:35 p.m., according to a news release from the department.

Units from the Wauwatosa Police Department were the first to arrive on scene and assisted with removal of occupants before the fire department's arrival.

Fire crews quickly determined the fire was located in the bedroom of a first floor apartment and extinguished the fire, according to the release. All apartments were searched and it was determined all occupants were removed without injury.

Smoke detectors in the building were activated and notified occupants of the fire.

No injuries occurred at the scene and damage to the building and property is estimated at $40,000. The American Red Cross was on-scene to assist with temporary housing for the tenants.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is believed to be accidental in nature and possibly caused by improper use of a lighter.

The Wauwatosa Fire Department was assisted by departments from Milwaukee, North Shore, Brookfield and Elm Grove.
