Wauwatosa West girls track team runs away with Woodland Outdoor title

Wauwatosa West girls track and field coach Jack LoPresti collects conference championships like some people collect baseball cards. When his Trojans won the Woodland Conference Outdoor on May 17 at New Berlin West, it was their 23rd conference title since 2005.

West ran off with the title, outscoring second place Whitnall by 47.50 points, 155 to 107.50.

"It was an amazing team effort — the girls scored over 150 points — just a tremendous job in so many events," LoPresti said. "(It was) a real tribute to all the girls and our coaching staff. I feel lucky to work with such a group of coaches and athletes every day."

Mercy Ndon won the 100-meter dash (12.19 seconds), followed by Cheri'A Adams (12.23) and Azya McLin (12.29), making it a clean sweep of the top spots; all three broke the 100-meter Woodland Outdoor meet record.

"Mercy, Cheri'A, and Azya are an awesome group," LoPresti said. "This year has been fun, and we are looking forward to many cool things in the coming weeks. Those three amigos made it look easy in the 200-dash as well, sweeping up the 200; it was very fun to watch."

Adams won the 200 (26.11), followed by McLin (26.62) and Ndon (26.71).

Adams also showed off her field-event skills by winning the triple jump (37-11/2) and took second in the long jump (16-2).

Super sophomore Bri Weigman won the high jump with a personal best of 5 feet, 4 inches and ran two great legs on the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Sophomore sensation Kayla Crump won the 300 hurdles (49.05) and placed third in the high hurdles (16.49); she also ran a leg of the 4x200 winning relay.

The 4x100-meter relay finished first in 50.61 seconds behind McLin, freshman Brishaun Bailey, Weigman and Ndon. The 4x200 relay also won in 1:48.92, with Brianna Horton, Bailey, Weigman and Crump.

Julia Larson was third in the 400 in 1 minute, 03.95 seconds.

"Freshman star Julia Larson just continues to improve and make a mark," LoPresti said. She grabbed third against a solid field of competitors."

Senior veteran Anna Roghan grabbed second in the 1,600 (5:36.90) and gutted out a third-place finish in the 800 (2:31.70) coming up with big points in her final conference meet.

Senior Brianna Horton finished second in the 300 hurdles, fourth in the long jump (15-73/4) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.59).

Other scorers were junior Kim Mai, who was fifth in the pole vault (8-0), sophomore Jade Tanjung, who finished eighth in the 400 (1:06.77), and sophomore Ashley Salomone, who was eighth in the 300 hurdles (53.91).

The 4x400 relay was eighth (4:29.66) with Larson, Roghan, Tanjung and Salomone.
