State Street road work may be the biggest headache this year in Wauwatosa

It wouldn't be summer in Wisconsin without road construction, and Wauwatosa is no different.

Here are a few of the major headaches drivers may encounter as they navigate the streets in the coming months.

1) Construction work on the State Street redevelopment project in the Village of Wauwatosa began May 9. Eight-inch thick concrete pavers designed and manufactured for roadway service will be installed throughout the area. A number of landscaping features and a curbless center Village plaza will be installed. State Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, but will reopen during evenings and weekends with a one-way, westbound-only lane. There are three project phases; the first phase has an estimated cost of $5.2 million.

2) Existing curb and gutter will be removed on North 91st and North 93rd streets, both from Menomonee River Parkway to Stickney Avenue this summer. The existing asphalt pavement will be milled as required and replaced with concrete curb and gutter and asphalt pavement. Work is expected to begin in July. No detours are anticipated.

3) The defective curb and gutter along Congress Street from North 108th Street to Mayfair Road will be replaced. New asphalt pavement will be installed on the existing road base. Work is expected to begin in July. No detours are anticipated.

4) Alleys in several places will undergo construction work under a green program through the city between August and October: from 74th to 76th Streets between Center and Clarke streets; between Watertown Plank Road and Gridley Avenue from Robertson Street to 130 feet west of Elm Lawn Street; and between Menomonee River Parkway and Watertown Plank Road from Elm Lawn Street and 85th Street. The project installs a brick strip with a permeable surface so that water, when pitched toward it from the concrete, can drain into the subsoil drainage system rather than into storm sewers. There will be no detours.

Zoo Interchange

The largest transportation project in Wisconsin history, the Zoo Interchange Project, will reconstruct the Zoo Interchange in Milwaukee County.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's construction website, a number of closures will take place to accommodate the project, including long-term closures along I-94 involving a merging -lane closure of an eastbound lane from Elm Grove to the Hank Aaron State Trail, through late summer or early fall.

The northbound lanes between National and Greenfield avenues along Highway 41 and I-894 will be closed through fall. Other long-term closures include Schlinger Avenue under I-894/Highway 45, Wisconsin Avenue from 95th to 97th streets, eastbound Fairview Avenue from 118th to 116th streets, eastbound Kearney Street from 84th to 70th streets and eastbound Adler Street at 84th Street.
