Wauwatosa West girls soccer team wins Woodland Conference championship

So far, so good for coach Ryan Bailey's Wauwatosa West girls soccer team.

The Trojans finished the regular season with a 12-4-3 overall record and the Woodland Conference championship with a 10-0-1 record in conference play.

They finished the regular season with a 1-1 record, beating Whitnall, 4-1, in a conference match on May 17 to start the week. They lost a nonconference road match to Muskego on May 21.

West clinched the Woodland Conference championship with a 4-1 win over the Falcons, scoring quickly when Kate Murphy scored at the six-minute mark on an exquisite ball from Hannah Fuerstenau.

"We dominated the ball but were unable to add to our lead until the 22nd minute," Bailey said.

At that time Gaby Zabala and Emily O'Connell combined to finish.

"We were able to play everyone in the first half, and all responded to the pressure of a 2-0 lead with a championship on the line," Bailey said.

In the second half, West scored its third goal on a corner that was again Zabala to O'Connell. The Trojans' final goal was a first for Olivia Starrett, scoring off a pass from Irene Phillips to cap the scoring.

"It was a savory end to a championship-winning conference season," Bailey said.

The Trojans closed the regular season with a 4-0 loss to Muskego on Saturday.

"If nothing else, we were able to take away things that need to be corrected going into the playoffs," Bailey said. "We gave up three goals in the first half in a variety of ways. Muskego was able to disrupt our tempo and took advantage of their chances.

"We are still not healthy and now have 11 days until regionals to refocus and be at our best for one game to advance."
