Three Wauwatosa West boys qualify for state track and field meet

The Wauwatosa West boys track and field team finished third at the West Allis Central regional on May 23 and then finished seventh (47 points) at the Brookfield East sectional.

Senior Christian Jackson won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.56 seconds to qualify for this weekend's WIAA State Track and field Championships at UW-La Crosse, June 3-4.

"Definitely one of the highlights was Christian Jackson taking first in the 110 high hurdles to go back to state," West coach Scott Jordan said.

He will be joined by junior Javaree Jackson, who won the shot put with an amazing toss of 56 feet, 11 inches.

"The surprise of the meet had to be Javaree Jackson winning the shot put," Jordan said. "This was a personal best by a foot and a half," Jordan said. "I'm very excited to take him to the state meet to see how far he will go."

Wheelchair athlete Evan Gerndt, a senior, is also returning for his third state meet. He won the shot put with a toss of 19-9 and finished second in the 800 (3:35.63) and the 400 dash (1:41.67).

"Evan had a great meet in posting personal bests in all of his events," Jordan said.

Just missing a chance to go to state (the top three qualify) was junior Paris Hannah-Howell, who was fourth in the high jump (6-1), and senior Jovanni Jefferson, who was fourth in the pole vault (12-6).

Regional

The Trojans were third at the West Allis Central regional with 123 points behind Tosa East (161) and Marquette (133).

The following athletes qualified for the sectional, as the top four were eligible to move on: high jump: Hannah-Howell (third, 5-10); long jump: Henry Tyson (fourth, 18-5); shot put: J. Jackson (first, 52-3); 110 hurdles: C. Jackson (second, 15.01), Kyleon Parker (fourth, 16.40); 200: Bascom (fourth, 23.70); discus throw: J. Jackson (second, 137-11); pole vault: Jefferson (first, 12-6), Nick Hagopian (second, 12-0); and triple jump: Hannah-Howell (second, 40-81/2) and Michael Green (third, 39-2).

The relays that qualified for sectional follow: 4x200 behind Malik Bascom, C. Jackson, Tyson and Aaron Johnson-Moorer (third, 1:32.94); 4x100 behind Bascom, Tyson, Johnson-Moorer and Hannah-Howell (third, 44.65); and 4x800 behind Ngaru Nen, Jeramiah Cash, Joshua Cash and Christopher Jackson (third, 10:12.04)
