Offense holding back Wauwatosa West baseball team

The struggles for the Wauwatosa West baseball team continued this past week, as the Trojans dropped all five games they played.

"We had a really hard time scoring runs," coach Jason Borski said. "At one point, we were at 25 innings in a row without a run."

After starting the season 4-1, Tosa West has dropped 10 consecutive games to fall to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the Woodland West.

"There are glimpses of some very good baseball mixed in with some pretty poor baseball," Borski said. "We need to figure out a way to be more consistent in all aspects of the game going forward."

at Pius

The Trojans got off to a poor start, losing twice to Pius, 11-1, on June 13 on the road and, 7-6, on June 14 at Breitlow Field.

The Trojans dropped their fourth straight game June 13 at The Rock Sports Complex in Franklin to the Popes. Brett Smerz was solid on the mound for the Popes, only allowing two hits. The two hits for the Trojans both came in the same inning from Jake Brophey and Logan Scharf.

Scharf pitched 32/3 innings, and Will Jushka pitched 11/3 for the West.

Pius

Fans got free baseball on June 14 as Pius XI needed 13 innings and two days to finish off the Tosa West Trojans in a 7-6 ballgame at Breitlow Field.

"We had a nice bounce-back game on Tuesday into Wednesday against Pius," Borski said. "We were run-ruled on Monday and came back and forced a 13-inning game on Tuesday but were not able to get the hit we needed."

JJ Morgan paced the Trojans at the plate, going 3-for-6, and scored two runs. He singled in the first, fifth and 10th innings.

TJ Driver got the win in relief for Pius, pitching two innings and allowing no runs.

The top of the first saw the Popes take an early lead, 3-0, but West came back in the bottom of the first with five runs.

Tosa West scored on an RBI single by Jacob Greenberg, a two-run triple by William Jushka and a two-run single by Brophey.

Pius scored a run in the third, and West followed with a run in the fifth for a 6-4 lead.

Pius XI stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the 13th, after adding on one run.

Morgan had three hits, and Myles Fish added two hits for the Trojans.

Whitnall

The Trojans were shut out by the Falcons, 7-0, on June 16.

After allowing three runs in the first three innings, Nick Price settled in and got Tosa West through six innings. Whitnall scored one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to blow the game open.

Morgan went 2-for-3 for the Trojans, who were held down by Falcon pitcher Jayvin Redieske.

Cedarburg

Despite six strong innings from Scharf, Tosa West dropped a 3-0 decision at Cedarburg on June 17.

Scharf gave up just five hits and didn't walk a batter. The Bulldogs scored all three of their runs in the third inning, including a two-run double by Jordan Grimm. Greenberg had two hits, and Jake Hronek tripled for the Trojans.

Franklin Wood Bat Tournament

The Trojans appeared on their way to snapping their losing streak against Germantown in the Franklin Wood Bat Tournament on June 18. However, the Warhawks scored nine runs in the seventh to send Tosa West to a 13-7 loss.

Noah Katula gave Tosa West a strong start against the Warhawks, but poor defense in the seventh inning opened the door for Germantown to rally.

"We got a great start from Katula and then in the top of the seventh errors extended the inning," Borski said. "Then the Germantown bats came to life."

In the consolation game, Tosa West fell, 9-2, to Kettle Moraine in a game shortened to six innings due to a time limit.

The Lasers jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the Trojans plated two runs on a pair of bases-loaded walks in the fifth. LeRoy Coleman and Tyler Schackmuth had Tosa West's only hits.

Ian Newton took the loss for the Trojans, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 11/3 innings. Schackmuth gave up two runs in two innings, and Ryan Greener pitched 22/3 scoreless innings.

Tosa West will head to South Milwaukee for a 5 p.m. game June 23 and Port Washington for a 5:30 p.m. game June 24. The "Battle for Tosa" between Tosa East and Tosa West is set for 3:30 p.m. June 25 at Breitlow Field.
