After beginning the season with consecutive losses, the Milwaukee County Chargers picked up their first win July 9 with a 44-6 drubbing of the Sheboygan Rebels.

The Chargers, a semiprofessional football team that rebranded from the West Allis Scorpions and moved to Hart Park in Wauwatosa, play in the Northern Division of the Midstates Football League.

Facing the winless Rebels, the Chargers struck first on a 27-yard field goal by Steve Vitale.

A 5-yard touchdown pass from Shannon King to Shaq Russell made it 10-0 in the second quarter. Two plays after the Chargers' defense recovered a fumble at the 50-yard line, RaShawn Herron, aided by great blocks from tight end BJ Graves and fullback Chris Ford, was able to go 42 yards for a score.

The Chargers struck again in the second quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from King to Aunton Terry, giving Milwaukee County a 24-0 halftime lead.

Herron scored from 24 yards out on Milwaukee County's first drive of the third quarter. The Chargers made it 37-6 early in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by Derwin Pottinger. Jermaine O'Conner capped the scoring by going 12 yards for a touchdown on an end around.

King finished 12-for-22 for 167 yards and two touchdowns through the air while also running for 69 yards. Herron ran for 189 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

The Chargers fell, 28-12, at the Racine Raiders on June 18 and 25-13 to the Door County Destroyers on June 25.

At 1-2, Milwaukee County is tied for fourth place in the six-team Northern Division. The Chargers will travel to Whitnall High School to face the Muskego Hitmen (2-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 16. Their next game at Hart Park is July 23 against the Racine Threat.
