Gypsy moth spraying on tap

May 22, 2009

A red and white twin-engine plane will be flying low over the area bounded by 81st, 76th and Wright streets and North Avenue as it sprays for gypsy moths as early as 5:15 a.m. tomorrow.

Gypsy moths quickly strip leaves off trees, damaging the trees severely. The plane will spray a 55-acre area where the caterpillar population has been found.

People with severe food allergies or asthma may react to the spray, so they are encouraged to stay indoors.

If there is a lot of rain or wind, the spraying will be postponed.

The state has set up a hotline, (800) 642-6684, to inform residents where and when spraying will occur.
