Programs offer phone assistance for elderly, people with low incomes

Low-income or elderly residents who are more likely to rely on community resources and emergency services may have trouble accessing assistance if they can't afford telephone service, according to the Wisconsin Public Service Commission.

But two programs can provide assistance.

Under the Lifeline program, people who participate in certain public assistance programs are entitled to receive a basic telephone service discount of up to $10 per month.

Link Up provides a 50 percent reduction in the telephone service installation charge, up to a maximum of $30, for qualifying households that do not have telephone service.
