Wife alerts police that husband was driving drunk

Sept. 22, 2009

When an officer pulled over a 48-year-old Milwaukee man suspected of drunken driving, he asked for identification. Rather than handing over a driver's license, the man provided a license revocation notice he had received after an August drunken driving conviction.

According to a Wauwatosa Police Department report:

The man's wife called police at 8:20 p.m. Sept. 12 to alert them that her husband had been drinking for the past eight hours, they had gotten into a fight and he had taken off in his minivan. She was following him, watching as his car straddled the center line, turned without signals and slowed down to 5 mph at points.

Officers found the vehicle parked at Radisson Hotel, 2303 N. Mayfair Road, where he planned to stay for the night. A half-empty beer was found in the cup holder and numerous other cans in the front seat.

He refused to have his blood-alcohol level tested. But he said he was on numerous medications, including morphine, due to a recent heart attack and stroke.
