The Wauwatosa School Board tried last night to resolve the controversy that grew out of Superintendent Phil Ertl's decision not to allow a live classroom airing of President Barack Obama's address to schoolchildren early this month.
The board unanimously passed a resolution stating that "the Wauwatosa School District welcomes the opportunity to have the sitting president of the United States speak to our students about the importance of education."
The board also beat back an amendment from board member Philip Kroner that would have precluded requiring parental permission before students could join their classmates to view the broadcast. Michael Meier was the only board member to support Kroner's proposal, which was defeated on a 4-2 vote.
Ertl said such a presidential address would not require parental notification before a live classroom airing.
