East finishes with first winless season under Swittel
Wauwatosa East dropped a 42-6 decision to West Allis Central at Hart Park on Wednesday night and finished with the first winless season under coach Tom Swittel.
Bulldogs' running back Jon Green ran for three touchdowns and Nick Starich caught two TDs from Ryan Barwick to spark the win for Central.
East trailed 28-0 at intermission and only a 41-yard TD-pass from Ethan Harris to Jake Larson kept the Raiders from being shut out.
Central rolled up 230 yards rushing for 407 total yards.
East finished the year 0-7 in Greater Metro play and 0-9 overall. The Bulldogs were 3-4, 5-4.

Hit-and-run to a house, OWI reported in Greenfield
An intoxicated Franklin man drove a truck into a Greenfield home Thursday night and fled the scene, according to a Greenfield Police Department release.
Police went to the home after receiving a call at 9:22 p.m. Thursday night that a white truck drove into the kitchen of a residence in the 4900 block of W. Midland Drive. Officers arrived and found significant damage to the home and vehicle parts left behind.
Officers found the vehicle and the 39-year-old Franklin man a few blocks away. The man told officers he hit the house because he, "drank too much."
The man was arrested on suspicion of a third offense operating while intoxicated and hit and run. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for minor injuries from the crash.
The crash caused significant structural damage to the home and it was deemed uninhabitable.
West Allis man charged in 2 killings ruled competent for trial
A 20-year-old man charged with killing a neighbor in West Allis and fatally shooting a woman on the interstate in Sauk County is competent to proceed with trial in Milwaukee County, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Zachary Tyler Hays faces one count of first-degree reckless homicide in Milwaukee County in the May 1 death of Gabriel Claudio-Sanchez, 42, his downstairs neighbor in a four-unit apartment building in the 2300 block of S. 92nd St.
Circuit Judge Ellen R. Brostrom agreed with the court-ordered doctor's report deeming Hays competent to proceed, meaning he can understand the charges against him and aid in his own defense. She set his bail at $100,000. Hays is expected back in court Aug. 5 for a preliminary hearing.
Hays also was charged in Sauk County Circuit Court with first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of recklessly endangering safety in the shooting death of Tracy Czaczkowski. At his initial appearance in that case, his attorney told reporters he believed Hays had mental health issues.
Hays described experiencing paranoia and hearing voices several days before the homicides, symptoms he believed were caused by "laced weed," according to a court-ordered report by psychiatrist John Pankiewicz.

Greenfield —Residents who are not on city trash pickup will soon be able to use the city dropoff site to dispose of furniture and other large items after buying a pass. Officials recently approved the sale of passes to start in late August at $15 for one visit and $45 for a year.
That groups of residents have not been able to use the dropoff site. Only those living in single-family homes, duplexes, small apartment buildings and some condominiums can, said Jeff Katz, director of neighborhood services and city engineer.
Large apartment buildings are considered to be commercial property, which made those residents ineligible to use the free dropoff site for trash and yard waste. at 51st St and Layton Avenue.
"People have asked about using the service," Katz said. "And we found a way to provide that."
Katz and the city's trash hauler, John's Disposal, developed a fee that they estimate will cover the cost of hauling away trash from those not in the city's solid waste disposal program. The fee is based on estimates of how many people would drop off trash and on how much they would bring, Katz said.

West Allis — Is West Allis paying its city employees too much, too little or just right, based on the going rate? That's what city officials want to find out in a classification and compensation study to be done by an outside consultant who will look at every position, top to bottom, except for that of City Administrator Rebecca Grill.
Carlson Dettmann Consulting does city administrators separately, Grill said. The West Allis Common Council will likely approve a consultant review of her position after the main study, she said.
Police and fire personnel are likely to be included in the study, although they are in a different category, being directed by the Police and Fire Commission. However, the commission and the city administration and finance committee reached a consensus last week that they should be.
Doing a comparative pay and benefits study periodically is sound practice, Grill said. It helps cities make sure they can hire and keep qualified employees and to be sure that pay for similar positions is fair from one department to another, she said. The last time the city had a classification and compensation study done was in 1980, she said.
Besides looking at compensation, the study will update job descriptions, determining what everyone does and will explore what skills they need to do it. That will make it possible to compare compensation with what employees in similar jobs receive.

Man suspected of shooting Milwaukee officer was out on bail
The 20-year-old West Allis man suspected of shooting a Milwaukee police officer before killing himself was out on bail after he was accused of punching a close family friend so hard it left the man paralyzed.
Milwaukee police identified the suspect Monday as Tomas A. Uriegas, who was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the city's south side.
About a half-hour earlier, Uriegas reportedly approached the passenger side of Officer Brandon Baranowski's squad car and fired multiple shots into the car, according to police.
Baranowski, 31, was wounded in the arm and chest. He remained hospitalized for his injuries and was expected to undergo surgery later Monday, a police spokesman said.
Mike Crivello, Milwaukee Police Association president, said he spoke to Baranowski, his parents and his wife at the hospital.

Greenfield residents can take part in some local summer fun this weekend at the 49th annual Family Festival hosted by St. John the Evangelist Parish on West Cold Spring Road.
The festival runs 5 to 11 p.m July 22, 3 to 11 p.m July 23 and noon to 9 p.m. July 24. Fireworks are 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
The festival will offer a $10 Friday night fish fry, a chicken dinner on Sunday and bingo each day in its air-conditioned location.

There will be no more smoking of electronic devices in bars and restaurants in West Allis, or anywhere tobacco smoking is banned in the city.
On a 6-4 vote, the West Allis Common Council banned smoking electronic cigarettes.
Aldermen voting for the ban said that if it's unhealthy for staff and patrons to allow cigarette smoking, it's unhealthy to allow e-cig smoking because no one really knows what chemicals are in the smoke. Those against the ban said it infringes on personal freedom and puts West Allis bars and restaurants at a competitive disadvantage. Those who want to smoke e-cigarettes might patronize establishments outside West Allis where they can smoke, those opposed said.
Gourmet grocery store of the world seeks second West Allis location
Parthenon Foods that specializes in European and gourmet imported foods from more than 45 countries, plans to open a second location at 84th Street and Greenfield Avenue in West Allis.
Its current location is at 92nd Street and Cleveland Avenue, also West Allis.
The proposed store would be in a former office building and located across the street from a 210-unit apartment building to be built by Ogden & Company and called Element 84. The proposed grocery store would be on the southwest corner of 84th and Greenfield and the apartments will be off the southeast corner.
Parthenon Foods is asking the city for a license to have a small liquor department offering imported wines and specialty liquors. Because allowing the license would put the city over its self-imposed class A liquor license maximum, a public hearing will be held. The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2.
Michael May, alderman for the area, supports going above the maximum, saying that if a large grocery store such as Pick 'n Save had the same request, it would probably be granted.

With the state of Wisconsin so serious about getting lead out of water flowing into homes that it has set aside $11 million to help, West Allis is trying to get its share of that.
The city has applied for a state Department of Natural Resources grant for up to half a million dollars. It would be used to replace public and even private water laterals, pipes that carry water from the main in the street to homes.
Lead is a hazard for young children. It causes developmental delays and possibly other problems, studies show. There is not a lead problem in West Allis, said Mike Lewis, public works director.
"We test extensively for lead and we pass the tests fine," he said.
However he said, "I believe the country as a whole is going toward replacing all lead pipes," so, a grant would help West Allis afford that.
