Police nab suspected counterfeiter

Nov. 16, 2009

Wauwatosa police have apprehended one of two men suspected of using counterfeit money to get real cash back at North Avenue businesses over the past several weeks.

According to police reports:

A 24-year-old Milwaukee paid for a dozen roses with a $100 bill at Sendik's Food Market, 8616 W. North Ave., on Wednesday afternoon. While checking out, he asked the cashier for her name and phone number, and she had a sense of déjà vu.

The same man had hit on a cashier Oct. 26 while buying flowers using a $100 bill that was determined to be counterfeit

She tried to stall the man while she had a manager check out the money, which turned out to be a washed out $5 bill. But he quickly left, driving into a nearby neighborhood, then abandoning his car to run through backyards on Jackson Park Boulevard, where he was arrested.
