Wauwatosa library offers fairy tale story night
The Wauwatosa Public Library will present a fairy tale family story night from 6:30 to 7 p.m. tonight at the library, 7635 W. North Ave.
The story night is intended for families with children 4 years old and older and will feature fairy tales, movement activities and puppet shows.
Registration is required and can be done in person at the library or by calling (414) 471-8486.
Composting, bugs are topics of Hawks Nursery classes
Hawks Nursery will present several classes this month.
"Composting: Black Gold" starts at 10 a.m. May 7. The No. 1 soil enhancer, compost improves fertility and drainage, helps plants grow better and recycles yard waste. Participants will learn how to build a compost heap, correct problems and use compost effectively.
"Bugs and Diseases" will be held at 1 p.m. May 7. Whether you want to go organic or not, learning the simple principles of Integrated Pest Management is the up-to-date way to make informed choices about how to deal with garden problems.
"Growing Beautiful Roses" will be held at 10 a.m. May 14. A national rose judge from the Milwaukee Rose Society will explain the many kinds of roses and teach proper feeding, pest control, pruning and winter protection techniques.
"Rain Gardens" will take place at 1 p.m. May 14. Surprisingly easy to create, rain gardens are an environmentally smart way to put excess rainwater to good use. Learn how to calculate size, dig and choose plants for a flower garden that will collect excess water and surprise you with its floral beauty and diversity.
"Home-Grown Vegetables" will be held at 10 a.m. May 21. Instructors will cover how to plan your garden, plant, cultivate and boost productivity through succession planting of fall vegetables.
Admission is $5 per class. Participants cannot register without payment. If interested in the Hawks University program, please inquire when you sign up.

Senior Center presents program on osteoporosis
The Hart Park Senior Center will co-host a public forum with the Arthritis Foundation at 8:30 a.m. May 10 at the Senior Center, 7300 Chestnut St.
Marjorie Chepp will present a program called "Osteoporosis: Understanding Weakening of Bone, its Prevention and Treatments."
The presentation is free, but registration is appreciated. Participants can register by calling the Senior Center at (414) 471-8495.

St. John's Lutheran School to hold blood drive May 11
A blood drive for the American Red Cross will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. May 11 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran School, 1278 Dewey Ave.
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and are generally in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years old and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Library program to focus on how to improve your resume
Tracy Tulle, business instructor for the College of Adult and Graduate Studies at Wisconsin Lutheran College will host a one-hour seminar on how to enhance your resume from 10 to 11 a.m. May 13 in the Firefly Room at the Wauwatosa Public Library, 7635 W. North Ave.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their resumes, and Tulle will provide one-on-one feedback.
No registration is necessary.
Free shredding day comes to Wauwatosa Pick 'n Save
Charter Investment Services and Pick 'n Save will sponsor a community shredding event from 9 to 11 a.m. May 14 at Pick 'n Save, 1717 N. Mayfair Road.
Free shredding will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring no more than two cartons of personal documents for shredding.
Refreshments also will be for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the Wisconsin Humane Society.
Wisconsin Geological Society presents rock and gem show
The Wisconsin Geological Society will present its 54th annual rock and gem show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 14 and 15 at the Muellner Building at Hart Park, 7300 Chestnut St.
The show will feature speakers, exhibits, a children's area, door prizes, food and more than 20 rock and gem dealers.
Admission is $3 for adults; children will be admitted free.

Neighborhood group seeks volunteers for weed-out
The Park Ridge Neighborhood Association, in conjunction with Milwaukee County Parks, will hold a weed-out for buckthorn and garlic mustard from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14.
Volunteers should meet on the Menomonee River Parkway at Woodward Avenue. Participants should bring gloves, shears and large trash bags.
