Monarch Trail friends host celebration

Wauwatosa — Join the Friends of the Monarch Trail from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 24 for the annual Migration Celebration.

The event takes place at the Monarch Trail on the Milwaukee County grounds, at Discovery Parkway and Eschweiler Drive, off of Swan Boulevard. Just look for the colorful flags and you will find the fun.

The celebration is free and open to all ages. Activities take place outdoors, rain or shine.

The celebration begins with a special interactive dance performance by Gwynedd Vetter-Drusch of the touring project "Moving for Monarchs," and includes guided tours of the monarch trail, monarch release, plein air artists, Irish music, educational displays about Monarch butterflies, face-painting, milkweed plants for sale, butterfly boutique items, and snacks, too.

The event schedule includes:

· 4-4:50 p.m.: "Moving for Monarchs" Program featuring dancer Gwynedd Vetter-Drusch movingformonarchs.org[cq]

· 5 p.m.: Monarch release

· 5:15-6:45 p.m.: Irish music by Ceol Cairde[cq] "Music of Friends" CeolCairde.com

· 5:30 and 6 p.m.: guided tours of the Monarch Trail

· 7 p.m.: Seventh annual migration celebration ends

Riverkeepers hosting cookout at Outpost

Milwaukee Riverkeepers is holding a cookout fundraiser at Outpost's outdoor patio, 7000 W. State St., from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5. The cookout features homemade bratwurst or a vegetarian grain sausage sandwich, chips and a natural soda for a suggested donation of $10 per person.

Proceeds help to keep local waterways clean.

the Avenue in East Tosa

Come and have fun at Chili'n on the Avenue in East Tosa from 9 to 5 p.m. Sept. 13. The street fair features a chili cook-off, street yoga, and a kids festival on North Avenue between 68th and 72nd streets.

Plenty of music, food

and family fun at Tosafest

Tosafest 2014 is set for Sept. 5 and 6 at 7615 W. State St., and continues Wauwatosa's 35-year tradition of music, food and family fun celebrating the historic village. Proceeds from TosaFest support community projects in education, safety and neighborhood improvement.

Zoo has scheduled

Ride on the Wild Side

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee hosts its Ride on the Wild Side beginning at 7 a.m. Sept. 14 at the zoo. The three distance routes — 27, 17 and 10 miles — go north through the Menomonee River Parkway along the Oak Leaf Trail.

Bike riders depart between 8 and 8:15 a.m. After the ride, participants return to the zoo for a picnic lunch.

For pre-registration prices, register by Sept. 14. Day-of-event registrations will be accepted, but are higher. Helmets are required.

The cost is $35 for adult members of the Zoological Society (ages 14 and older); $12 for children (ages 3-13); and $85 for a family of four. Prices are higher for non-members. The registration fee includes a continental breakfast, picnic lunch, a long-sleeve T-shirt, zoo admission and parking.
