Jazz performance slated at senior center

"Jazz & Such" will perform from 3:30 to 5 p.m. April 9 at Hart Park Senior Center, 7300 Chestnut St. The cost is free to members or a $1 donation.

Performer slated to attend annual Spring Tea

The annual Spring Tea event is scheduled for 1 p.m. April 11 at Hart Park Senior Center, 7300 Chestnut St.

Fully-costumed character performer Christine Brooks will appear as Gladys Wheeler, a member of one of the first families of Wauwatosa. Her researched performance will entertain guests with stories from the past. Fifth-generation relatives of the Wheeler family still live in the Elm Grove area. Attendees who wear a hat will be eligible to win the door prize. The cost is $8 for members and $13 for non-members.

'The Winter's Tale' hits the stage in April

William Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" will be brought to life on stage at 8 p.m. April 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21. There is also a performance scheduled for 3 p.m. April 15 at Wisconsin Lutheran College Center for Performing Arts, 8800 W. Bluemound Road.

One of Shakespeare's last plays, the story focuses on the royal serenity of peaceful kingdoms, jealousy and rage, intrigue and death, a pastoral romance, a rustic holiday and eventual reunification.

Zoo offers family free days for 2012 season

Family free days for the 2012 season at the Milwaukee County Zoo, sponsored by North Shore Bank and FOX 6, are scheduled for April 14, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1

Take advantage of all the zoo has to offer for free. The parking fee remains in effect.

Gary's Gallop kicks off at Wisconsin Lutheran College

Gary's Gallop, a community race named after Wisconsin Lutheran College's late President Dr. Gary Greenfield, includes a 5k run, 2-mile walk, and a children's race on April 14. The run/walk begins at 9:30 a.m. at the college's outdoor athletic complex located just west of Highway 45 at Watertown Plank Road.

Participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt, food and beverages, a tour of WLC's new outdoor athletic center building, in addition to awards for the top finishers. The cost to participate is $20 paid by April 12 or $25 on race day. The children's race begins at 10:30 a.m. A free, supervised children's corner is available during the 5k run and 2-mile walk. Strollers and pets are welcome.

Volunteers needed for tutoring program

"Empowering Latino Parents," an AmeriCorps VISTA-funded program managed by Mount Mary College and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin is seeking volunteers to tutor for its upcoming session to be held April 16 through June 15. The program provides English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring for parents and business owners in the Milwaukee area who are interested in learning and improving their English language skills.

All teaching materials are provided and speaking Spanish is not required. Tutors work one-on-one with the same individual during the eight- to 10-week session. Tutoring sessions are located at the HCCW, 1021 W. National Ave., and will be provided by community volunteers and Mount Mary College students.

Florentine Opera Company hosts opera program

"Florentine Opera Insights," a program hosted by the Florentine Opera Company is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. April 21 in the Firefly room at the Wauwatosa Public Library, 7635 W. North Ave.

This program will include an entertaining discussion of the opera and musical excerpts performed by members of the opera company.

Organizations plan river clean up day

The Friends of Hart Park Foundation and the Milwaukee Riverkeepers are hosting a Menomonee River Clean Up and Revitalization event from 9 a.m. to noon April 21.

Volunteers are needed to plant native species and clean along the Menomonee River and Hart Park. Participants should meet inside the Muellner Building at Hart Park, 6600 W. River Parkway, at 9 a.m. and bring gloves and shears. Bags will be supplied.
